This piece , played here by a Pi Klong ensemble, usually accompanies the spectacle of sword-fighting, though sometimes, in another version, it is music one might hear accompany a round or two of fierce Thai boxing. On such occasions it is the Pi Chawa, Indonesian in origin [ Chawa = Java ], the voice of which is yet more strident and piercing than that of the Pi Nai. The piece begins with a regular beat in the parts for both Pi and drums, but as it continues the Pi develops a complex version of the basic melody which frees itself from the symmetrical pattern of the drums.
