This island of Santorini (or Thira) is the result of one of the biggest volcanic eruptions in history. With a marriage of Venetian and Cycladic architecture, the town of Fira is built directly into the volcanic cliff. The famous blue and white of this place reminds me of my mother’s kitchen china. I’ve always had a special place in my heart for this color combination as a result.
All the blogs are saying it’s important not to get stuck in Fira and to travel the whole area of the island, so rent a car. The desert climate is perfect for wineries and sunsets – make sure you stake out some epic eats. Sounds like an amazing place to vacation if you’re based in Europe or the Middle East – apparently a lot of cruises stop here as well (duly noted).
