When I first found about Robert Smithson’s Earthworks in one of the last classes I took at UBC… I was mesmerized. I didn’t realize the work for environmental awareness (being green was a new thing, right?) had been going on for so long it had evolved so many different ways through culture. The Spiral Jetty was built of mud, salt crystals, basalt rocks, and dirt in the Great Salt Lake near Salt Lake City, Utah.

To me, the Spiral Jetty is the ultimate manifestation of wabi-sabi – the lake will continue to erode the piece until it is eventually not there …denoting the imperfection and impermanence in all things. The fluctuating water levels, salt content, and currents always create a different photograph. One piece of art has created millions to follow. One day in my life I will go here and take my own picture. I will definitely let you guys know when I do.
