Porto Katsiki, Greece

PLACE: Porto Katsiki
LOCATION: Lefkada, Greece
NOTORIOUS: White Beach
COORDINATES: 38.60250°N 20.54944°E

This striking white beach is located on the island of Lefkada and although it is an island, it’s connected to the mainland by a causeway and floating bridge. It is possible to drive to the beach and take the steps down the cliff, but there are also daily boat trips that leave from Nidri and Vasiliki harbour. The ride takes about 1.5 to 2 hours and can be fairly choppy at times.

Good news, despite being a high traffic tourist destination, crime is really low. Apparently this has been voted “Top European Beach of the Year” several times. Kind of a bummer, I thought this was a cute little beach I found by accident because of the photo above. If you happen to go in August, try not to be on the roads around noon because they are thin and traffic will be pretty much stopped at this time.

Santorini, Greece

LOCATION: Santorini, Greek Isles
NOTORIOUS: Greek Island
NEAREST AIRPORT: Direct into Santorini
COORDINATES: 36.4200° N, 25.4317° E

This island of Santorini (or Thira) is the result of one of the biggest volcanic eruptions in history. With a marriage of Venetian and Cycladic architecture, the town of Fira is built directly into the volcanic cliff. The famous blue and white of this place reminds me of my mother’s kitchen china. I’ve always had a special place in my heart for this color combination as a result.

All the blogs are saying it’s important not to get stuck in Fira and to travel the whole area of the island, so rent a car. The desert climate is perfect for wineries and sunsets – make sure you stake out some epic eats. Sounds like an amazing place to vacation if you’re based in Europe or the Middle East – apparently a lot of cruises stop here as well (duly noted).
