The sweeping shades of rocky hillside in Iceland’s Landmannalaugar region (near the infamous Hekla volcano) are so hauntingly beautiful I knew it was time to post about the country for the third time. The best part about this place is that it’s possible to do a short day hike or a long, overnight hike and both are spectacular (according to the blogs).

Apparently if you’re on a short trip you should skip the hot springs and hike for the base of Mount Brennisteinsalda which is an absolutely beautiful sight with it’s rainbow coloured rhyolite. Trip advisors are saying that the best way to really enjoy this area is a 2-3 day hiking in July or August sleeping in a tent or very basic accommodations. The paths are well marked.

I feel like this is where fairies are born. I don’t know why, it’s just a feeling. This canyon was carved out by the Fjaðrá River over millennia as the water from the glacier eroded the rock and palagonite. This canyon is located in the south east of Iceland and is only about 2 kilometres long.

This stretch is not far from the town of Kirkjubæjarklaustur, where Irish monks were thought to have first settled long before the Norse (weird I got the fairy vibe, eh?). This town has two hotels (Hótel Geirland and Icelandair Hotel Klaustur), a gas station, a bank, a post office and a supermarket – sounds like a romantic little getaway!

Vistors laying on the edge of the blue lagoon spa, a famous geothermal pool located 45 minutes outside of Reykjavik, Iceland.

I’m starting the adventure of collecting wonder with the Blue Lagoon, a famous geothermal spa located 45 minutes outside of Reykjavik, Iceland. The reason why is because the first time I saw this photo of people floating above the milky turquoise geothermal water, I couldn’t believe it was real. I instinctively scanned the photo for the touch of a photoshop magician. I went on an internet dive to find the photographic source to believe it was actually a place on earth.

It’s true, it is real. But the steamy waters are man-made. It’s run off from a near-by geothermal power plant built to harness the heat of lava flow in the area. The water is rich in minerals like silica and sulphur and averages 37-39 °C (98–102 °F) in temperature, just like a hot tub without the insane levels of chlorine. As you move closer to the water source, you can control how warm your hot spring experience is. Apparently it’s only a 20 minute drive from the international airport so if you need a last minute pit stop to kill some time, this would be a cool option. The website is pretty fancy, you can check more out about it here.
