This is my chilly slice of backdoor heaven. Just knowing Garibaldi Provincial Park is just around the corner excites me beyond measure. Getting here is a hike, literally. Ouch. The drive from Vancouver is just under two hours and it’s about a 4-5 hour vertical hike in just to Garibaldi Lake. This park is absolutely massive and has a few of the most phenomenal mountain views I’ve ever laid my eyes on.
I suggest trying to get to Wedgemount Lake if you can but Garibaldi/Black Tusk will suffice. You can do no wrong. Obviously this area is best to hike in the summer months as the winters can be pretty vicious. Bring layers – the weather can go from scorching hot to minus 15 (degrees C) in the same August day. The water looks refreshing but I was too chicken to swim in it. Maybe next time.
Have you swam in one of these glacier lakes? I want to hear about it!
