Earl Hooker lacked musical education, played guitar by ear, yet developed a crystalline and elegant style, and used the "wah wah" as a unique part of his musical expression, even though it was not a common currency in blues. Jimi Hendrix called him the master of the "wah wah pedal", Buddy Guy used to sleep with a Hooker slide under his pillow to see if anything of the master would rub off on him. B.B. King repeatedly stated that he was 1 of the greatest guitarists he had ever heard and Junior Wells a childhood friend said, "he couldn't read, he couldn't write, but his music said it all."
