Description
This is a short video of the premier performance of this piece written especially for Fang Lili. When JIANG Li, the composer first heard Lili’s singing, it amazed him and he described her voice like the “Bird of heavenly bells” (天灵鸟). He couldn’t get her voice out of his head for days, so he picked up the book of “300 Poems of the Tang Dynasty (唐诗三百首)” from his book shelf. As soon as the book opened up, it fell on Li Bai’s Farewell (金陵酒肆留别). Whilst reading the poem, Jiang Li could clearly visualise a young man having a farewell drink with his close friends before leaving his hometown for a faraway foreign land. The melody with Lili’s voice flew out of his head. He finished writing the melody in just two days and just in time for him to bring the song to visit Lili for the first time in Brighton. With the score in front of her, Lili felt the music jump out of the score immediately and she loved the song at first sight.
At the concert, Lili joined up with Xiao master Guo Yue and pianist/singer Ben Murray. It was the first collaboration between these musicians.
