Description
POEMA – a very controversial tango, often referred to as an “orphan” tango (one which is very difficult to mix in a tanda of the same orchestra and may need to be mixed), however I believe its best played with other Canaro – Maida tangos of the same year.
Few may know it was composed by Mario Malfi and lyrics proposed by Eduardo Bianco, supposedly on a train journey between Rome and Berlin Germany in 1932, Bianco’s. The lyrics for Poema tell his personal story from his final year in Buenos Aires. Bianco learned that his wife cheated on him with the pianist of the Apolo orchestra, and he shot his rival to death in a fit of jealousy. But that is what tangos are about.
The song was however made famous by Francisco Canaro and the magical voice of Roberto Maida in 1935. Many DJs tend to mix it with Invierno – 1938 another classic tango from the duo, but, in my humble opinion, they don’t fit in one tanda and Invierno deserves its own pride of place. In another tanda.
Its often referred to as a “European” tango (maybe because it was written there) and is seldom played in milongas in Buenos Aires and overplayed in Europe, as are most of Canaro’s tangos.
So, I present to you Poema with three other tangos from 1935.
POEMA - 1935
CASAS VIEJAS - 1935
AUNQUE NO LO CREAN- 1935
OJOS NEGROS QUE FASCINAN – 1935

I also invited you to take a look at Murat Edremsel’s graphic depiction of this wonderful song – its so amazing that we even have his original painting in the house.
