Three Variations on Plum Blossom (Mei Hua San Nong)
Lu Ning,guqin
Ma Yun,xiao
It is also known as "Prelude of Plum Blossom", "Song of Plum Flower" and "Prelude of Jade Concubine". According to "Tai Yin Bu Yi" and "Jiao’an Qin Score", it was originally a flute music composed by Huan Yin of Eastern Jin dynasty and was later adapted into a guqin version. The earliest musical score was found in the “Shen Qi Mi Pu”, literally “Amazing Secret Musical Score”, in 1425 AD. The Three Variations on Plum Blossom consists of ten sections in two parts. In the first part and the first six sections, it adopts the technique of repetition. The last four sections constitute the second part, depicting the static and dynamic features of the plum blossom. Through the pureness, fragrance and the resistance to cold of the plum blossom, the music expressed the inspiration of the composer and praised the noble people.
Guqin, also known as "yaoqin", "yuqin" and "qin with seven strings", is a traditional plucked string Chinese musical instrument with a history of more than 3,000 years. According to the bayin (“eight sounds”) classification system, guqin falls into the category of silk. It boasts a broad range, a deep tone and a long-lasting sound. The ancient books recorded that Fuxi invented the guqin, but there were also legends of Shennong, the Yellow Emperor, and Tangdi Yao as the inventors. It’s said that Shun made the guqin with five strings, then King Wen of Zhou added one string, and King Wu of Zhou added another one, making it seven strings. It shows that the Chinese guqin has a long and profound history. At the moment, there are more than 3,360 qin musics, 130 qin scores and 300 qin songs. On November 7, 2003, Chinese guqin was listed as a world intangible cultural heritage. In 2006, it was listed as China’s intangible cultural heritage.
