Thanks to the generosity of one of my subscribers Gramophonic Reevolution https://www.youtube.com/c/GramophonicReevolution/featured I have had my cracked copy of 'Mary's Boy Child' replaced, thanks Paul, go check him out.
In 1956 Harry Belafonte heard this song and asked to record it it was released in the US that Christmas, he re-recorded this longer version and it was released the following year also in the UK where it hit #1 on November 28th and stayed there for 7 weeks also reaching #10 the following year.
It was the longest single at 4.20 to reach the #1 spot in the UK, selling 1.19 million copies.
This longer version was not released as a single in the US but was on Harry's album 'An Evening With Harry Belafonte'
For me this is the best version ever recorded and my Grandad thought so too, when he came over he often wanted it playing whether on a cold snowy winters day or a blistering hot summer day.
