Description

Hesed (or Chesed) is a Hebrew word that is so dense with meaning that we had to invent the English word “lovingkindness” to try to describe it. It gets translated as long-suffering love, steadfast love, and in many other ways. You can take the sum of all the different ways that our English Bibles translate it to mean something like “covenant love.” It is a love that is bound with a promise.

For Christians, God’s covenant with you is this: I will be your God, and you will be my people. His love for you is rooted in that promise. He won’t stop loving you when you mess up. His love isn’t rooted in your behavior, it’s rooted in his covenant with you.

For people who don’t believe: there is a God who loves you, who has gone to great lengths to bring you back into his hesed.

CS Lewis said that Christianity is mainly about “your station” in the universe. That’s a delightfully formal British way to say: Christianity is about where you are positioned in this universe. Here is where you stand in the grand scheme of things: you’re a child of God. He has made a covenant with you, and no one can take that away from you.
