This short blessing thanks God for giving us life, keeping us alive, and helping us to reach this special moment.
It is traditionally said on special occasions such as the beginning of a Jewish holiday, performing a mitzvah for the first time, eating a fruit for the first time since Rosh Hashanah, acquiring something new, a life cycle event, and seeing a friend you haven't seen for 30 days.
It is a very old blessing that can be traced back to the Talmud (Berachot 54a, Pesachim 7b, Sukkah 46a)
