Herman Brood was a Dutch rock and roll icon whose rebellious spirit and artistic intensity made him a cult legend. A singer, pianist, and painter, he rose to fame in the late 1970s with his band Herman Brood & His Wild Romance.
Their music fused rock, punk, and blues, with Brood’s gravelly vocals and chaotic charisma leading the charge. Despite his creative brilliance, Brood battled lifelong drug addiction, which ultimately led to his tragic death by suicide in 2001.
In the Netherlands, he remains a symbol of artistic freedom—flawed but fearless, and completely himself.
“Saturday Night” was released in 1978 on the album Shpritsz, and became the band’s biggest international hit. It reached No. 35 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1979—a rare feat for a Dutch act—and became a staple of European rock radio.
