Shalom Aleichem was written in the seventeenth century and illustrates the Talmudic legend regarding angels who come at the onset of the Sabbath to observe a whether a person’s home is well-prepared or in disarray. The angels declare, “May it be God’s will that next Sabbath be like this”. The legend communicates that each time one carries out a commandment, it strengthens his ability to carry it out in the future. Shalom Aleichem has become a nearly universal and iconic component of the Friday night ritual.
