2022 is a lucky year for Chinese instrumentalists as two young lads landed in top Berlin orchestras. ZENG Yun was appointed principal horn by Staatskapelle Berlin, and MEI Diyang was appointed principal viola by Berlin Philharmonic, making both the first Chinese section leaders of their orchestras.
Last night I got a chance to hear MEI live when he played Elgar's Cello Concerto adapted for viola by Lionel Tertis. He generously encored two pieces, including Le Grand Tango by Piazzolla with the orchestra arranged for him by the principal viola of SSO. Elgar would be happy.
Long Yu opened Shanghai Symphony Orchestra's 2022/23 season last night with Pomp and Circumstance March No.1, a piece he conducted at the BBC Proms debut of him and of China Philharmonic some years ago. In the second half he revisited the Enigma Variations which he famously conducted in his SSO debut back in 1994.
In a time of war and COVID, the orchestra offered a night of Hope and Glory.
